AV Interactive Installation made at EMERGENCE Digital Media Science Communication Hackathon (São Miguel, Açores – Arquipélago – Centro de Artes Contemporâneas).
Did you know that about 50% of the fish you eat comes from aquaculture? And that this intensive aquaculture monoculture generates marine pollutants? How can we mitigate this problem? Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) could be the response to this imbalance.
IMTA concept is explained through an immersive and interactive experience. Such a system integrates the cultivation of several marine species of multiple trophic levels. The progressive decontamination of water produced by fed species (monoculture of fish, shrimp…) is achieved when a species is added to the system. A successful IMTA system mimics natural ecosystem function, while producing other added value resources (algae, sea urchins, oysters, mussels …). A virtual flow of water, fish, organic matter and nutrients is recreated. Whenever a new species is added to the system, the water is progressively decontaminated.
