FLOATING SATELLITES

Satellites02

‘Floating Satellites’ is an audiovisual interactive installation where position data of a series of artificial satellites orbiting around the planet earth is fed into the interactive system and used for graphic visualizations and sound control.
The orbits of the satellites around the planet earth act like a visual sequencer, and when the satellites cross specific coordinates events are triggered into the audiovisual generation system.

The satellites’ position data are mapped in relation to the position where the installation is situated. In this case, related to Dubai’s coordinates, creating this way a unique localized outcome.

Through a console interface the audience have the possibility to interact with the system by changing a series of parameters like the velocity of the satellites, selecting or disabling manipulation this way the outcome.

Satellites orbits predictions taken from: www.satellite-calculations.com/TLETracker/
More information about real time satellites’ positions at science.nasa.gov/iSat and N2YO.

Made with Processing. Touch Interface with TouchOSC. Sound in Ableton Live, controlled in real time from Processing via MIDI messages
Processing code in Github.
Used the Processing Code “Gps satellites simulation” from Aart Rost as starting point for the satellites’ orbits and spherical coordinates.

Concept/Programming/Visuals by Rodrigo Carvalho. Sound by André Sousa
Installation presented at ISEA 2014 / DUBAI.
